Scholarship to study a doctorate in Canada

The Canadian government created this in 2008 in order to attract applicants to study a doctorate to their country. Its goal is for national and international students with academic excellence to continue their studies. Annually, the program awards about 160 scholarships. Support is around $50,000 CAD annually for up to 3 years.

The program seeks applicants who meet 3 criteria: academic excellence, research potential and leadership. This last quality must have been previously demonstrated and the applicant must have the potential to continue developing it.

  • Be nominated by an  affiliated Canadian institution.
  • Finding yourself pursuing your first doctorate.
  • Have an outstanding average.
  • Not having been a benefactor of a doctoral scholarship until that moment.
  • Have completed 20 months of your  full-time doctoral program by May 1, 2024 and no more than 32 months if the program is an MD/PhD, MA/PhD, MS/PhD, or DVM/PhD.

* Part-time graduate students may be considered due to a disability, medical reasons, maternity, paternity or other family responsibilities. For these students, Vanier CGS will be equivalent to Full Time postgraduate courses in terms of funding.

Not all study programs are eligible for this scholarship.  The criteria are:

  • It should focus on research, which leads to the creation of a thesis, research project, academic publication, etc.

To be considered, the student must be nominated by an institution that has previously received a Vanier CGS quota (that is already affiliated with the scholarship program).
